The Europian Commision (EC) has implemented the restriciton on phthalate content in toys and other articles for children in the age group 0-3 years. The regulation concerns only six phthalates : dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butylbenzyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP), diethyl phthalate (DEHP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP).

Furthermore, the maximum authorized concentration of these phthalates (total phthalate content) in toys and other articles for children in the age group 0-3 years is < 0.1 % (w/w).

Test Method & Procedure :

1.) Cut the test sample into small pieces.

2.) Acurately weigh a small amount into a beaker.

3.) Place sample into a solvent extraction apparatus.

4.) Use dichloromethane as the extraction solvent.

5.) Place extract into a rotary evaporator and concentrate to about 10ml.

6.) 1 uL of concentrated extract was analyzed using GC-MS. All samples were analyzed in duplicates.

7.) The identification of phthalates are performed by comparing the GC retention tmes and mass spectra of phthalate standards.

8.) From the results, concentrations of the phthaltes present in the respective samples are calculated using linear regression.
