MERALCO consumers will experience another rate price increase by an average of 27 centavos per kilowatt-hour (kwh) under the performance-based rate (PBR) mechanism.

This was after Meralco carried out a series of reductions in generation charge for the past four months. Under the PBR, which was approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission, Meralco may update and change its distribution charge every year taking into consideration some factors such as inflation rate and foreign exchange movements.

Meralco seeks to increase its distribution charges by 26.9 centavos per kilowatt-hour to P1.4917 per kWh for regulatory year 2010 under the PBR scheme. PBR (Performance-Based Rate) is an internationally accepted rate setting mechanism that uses as basis the quality of service to its customers.
