Fox announced last Wednesday that Ellen DeGeneres will officially be the fourth judge for season 9 of American Idol. She will now join the lineup of judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi.
On an episode for her talk show, DeGeneres said that she can’t wait to announce it and has been “dying to tell everyone” about it.
The 51-year-old comedienne and Emmy-awardee talk show host is filling in the spot left by Paula Abdul. This decision very much surprised many Idol fans. She admitted that she’s no music authority compared to Simon, Randy and Kara but she promised to be the people’s point of view among the judges since she’s an American Idol fan herself.
“I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote! Hopefully I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you. I sit at home and I watch it. I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person,” she said.
But ofcourse this is not the first time for DeGeneres to be a judge for a show. It can be remembered that she was a guest judge once in the dance reality show “So You Think You Can Dance” and also co-hosted the charity event of Idol entitled “Idol Gives Back.”
